Getting Out There
by Tom on Monday, March 5th, 2007We’ve just come back from One Life Live, having spread the word about our project, introduced people to the idea of cycle touring, and met up with mountain-biking legend Hans Rey. Andy and I are going to be the first Wheels4Life ambassadors, locally buying and donating bikes while we’re on the road to those who would benefit from them.

The stand had a lot of interest from a big range of people. I got talking to Craig Hughes, who cycled 4,500 miles around Scandinavia last summer under the moniker ChallengeA2Z. His help and advice was extremely useful and hopefully will generate some more potential sponsorship leads. Other fascinating people I talked to included a couple of girls who are planning to ride horses from Europe to Japan next year; a chap who was working on a project to get the nation to realise the worth of the elderly; 2 very determined girls who have each put everything they have into starting their own ecologically-oriented businesses (One Green Earth and Your Safe Planet); numerous world travellers and cycle-tourers; and a lot of people who might just be convinced to organise their own cycle tour as a result of having talked to me and Andy.

We’re incredibly indebted to the organisers for giving us the opportunity to promote our project (thanks especially to Anna and Helen!), and to our sponsor ExtremeGB for the display materials which set off our stand presence so well and showed people how the great outdoors can be enjoyed. It’s also clarified the aims and methods of the expedition in my mind and moved the idea significantly towards reality. More photos from the event are on my Picasa web album.
